The Common Place Orchestra

On October 8th, the after-school music program at The Common Place Scholars program was born.  Third and fourth-grade students from both ICS West and Cornerstone Christian Academy began learning a new language – the language of music!  Students also began a journey of exploring composers and musicians from all over the world, as well as important African-American musicians such as Thelonious Monk and Nina Simone.  The inaugural group of string players, also known as the “String Choir”, began playing as an ensemble a mere five days after holding their instruments for the first time!

We are so thrilled to have four Teaching Artists and multiple Guest Artists bring their joy of music to these students, and we are so excited to guide this group down it’s path to forming a youth orchestra in Southwest Philly!
