Gene Burke serves as Director of Operations for The Common Place (TCP), where he leads strategic planning, program implementation, and organizational systems that support TCP’s mission of providing holistic support to children and families in Southwest Philadelphia. A long-time resident of the neighborhood, Gene first joined TCP in February 2017 as Office Manager, bringing more than a decade of operational management and administrative experience. Since then, he has played a central role in strengthening internal systems, streamlining communications, and cultivating partnerships that expand the organization’s reach. His leadership and commitment to growth led to successive roles as Director of Outreach and Fundraising Administration in 2018 and Director of Operations in 2021, where he continues to guide cross-sector collaborations, campus coordination, and community-centered initiatives.

In addition to his operational leadership, Gene contributes to program design and innovation at TCP, helping shape initiatives that expand access to arts education, youth development, and creative learning opportunities. His work reflects a balance of strategic infrastructure and relational leadership, grounded in a deep commitment to culturally responsive community engagement.

Outside of TCP, Gene is a musician, songwriter, and educator, and the founder of Master Key Music School (MKMS), where he teaches piano, music theory, and performance skills to students of all ages. He also serves as Elder of Worship and Minister of Music at Salt & Light Community Church (PCUSA/UCC), where he helps develop and lead worship services and music ministry programming. Gene has completed a two-year Spiritual Direction Formation program at Cranelith Spiritual Center and holds a certificate in Generative AI Prompt Engineering from Rutgers University. He has also pursued studies in Operational Leadership through Eastern University.

Gene is married to Fatima Burke, a Senior Product Designer at Thoughtbot Inc., and together they collaborate on creative and community-centered projects, including multi-genre music initiatives developed through institutional partnerships. They are the proud parents of four sons — David, Micaiah, Aaron, and Judah — and family remains a central source of inspiration for Gene’s work, creativity, and service.
