The Jackson Durham Scholarship Fund provides a continued purpose and legacy for Jackson’s contribution to our world. He passed away at the early age of 20 in August of 2019.
As the Durham family contemplated a meaningful and beneficial means to honor Jackson’s life and gifts, they chose The Common Place; a non-profit educational center in Southwest Philadelphia. The Common Place, commonly known as TCP, focuses on educating children in music, arts, and technology. Among Jackson’s many exceptional gifts, music and art were paramount. This scholarship fund provides resources and tuition to under-resourced families who would otherwise have limited opportunities to develop these talents. These children now have an avenue to excel in areas that have been discontinued in Philadelphia public schools due to funding shortages.
The Common Place Scholars and our summer S.W. Arts and Technology Camp programming have realigned its focus to provide cyber programming as we weather the COVID -19 pandemic. We have developed a food give-a-way program for children and community members. Our presence is of paramount importance as we not only negotiate our way through the pandemic but also foster healing in an environment of racial inequality and social injustice.
